I am starting a Virtual Assistant business and need to know the legalities behind starting a home business in?

Chicago, Illinois... do i need a business license, insurance, do I need to register my business name? Do I need an EIN number... is all this necessary or can I just build my website and start working? What about the IRS? I need help in any of these questions and anything else I may be missing... it would just be me working... no employees...

Ok, if you're the only employee then this is a sole proprietorship. From an IRS perspective, you don't need to apply for an EIN number, you can just use your social security number.

However, IL may require you to get an EIN as your services might require sales tax to be collected (I'm not familiar with sales tax laws in IL...check into it). Check with your local municipal government to see if you need to obtain a business license to operate this type of business in your home.
