Virtual Assistant Pricing?

I took on a job as a Virtual Assistant. The lady negoitiated a pretty low price for my services since it was my first job as a VA. I was fine with that because I wanted the experience. I considered it a good way to see if I like the job and want to start my own business. She has given me a slight increase but it's still well below what others are getting. And I feel that because I have an MBA and a wealth of business experience, I deserve what experienced VAs are getting.

The person I'm working for referred a friend to me. I did a small project for this person. She now wants to know what my hourly rate is.

Is it bad to charge the new person more than her friend? I wouldn't charge her a lot more but I would say something like "because I'm new to VA services I'm charging ____" My thought is that this will let her know that I'm still working on my price list without sounding too wishy washy. (It's about 1/3 of what others charge.)

Is there a better way to say it?

I see no problem with raising your rates if you feel its worth it. One thing I do hate to break to you is that most of your competition for VA's come from India where you can pick up an MBA for $10-12hr.

On the other hand now you havee experience with VA's maybe you can start your own business and get VA's from India to do the contracts nwhile you sip Pina Colada's. Check out the Four Day Workweek. No affiliation yada yada

Re: competition from Indian contractors who are charging $10-12 per hour, you have to ask yourself about the quality of the work and the turnaround time. Also a professional VA offers an ongoing business relationship which goes far beyond just doing the work.
