Virtual reality: The way of the future?

No, im not talking about just staring at a computer screen and manipulating a little character. I'm talking about fully immersive VR: goggles, treadmills, maybe some kind of frame that would support you and allow you to do more than just walk around, maybe even a full body suit that uses electrical impulses to simulate touch. The tech might be far off, but just think of the possibilities: Medical training with no fear of hurting your patient, dangerous activities like rock climbing, skydiving or combat with no danger, the ability to visit places without leaving the comfort of your home, to conduct business face to face without actually being there, to visit relatives whenever you want, to understand complex concepts like atomical science or anatomy from the inside. Not to mention an entirely new generation of gaming, based on actual skill. But is this too much to hope for?

I hope not entirely, it has its place but I like real ,solid objects and sentient beings to relate to. If we get too dependent on technology when it fails and it always does how would we relate then?

Nothing is too much to hope for! We have a lot to look forward to in the future. We are already doing the virtual medical training. Though I don't think it would be a good idea to virtually simulate vacation spots because then no one would want to actually go to the real place. They have right on their virtual reality helmets! You know what I mean? But none the less the future is bright for smart people like you and me!

10 years ago I would have thought so, but I hardly ever hear virtual reality used as a phrase anymore. The software was just too big and clunky. Plus, today's large screens, web cams, and surround sound stereos make the whole idea seem a bit silly.

But don't give up hope. I'd say we are closer to cybernetic implants that would enable us to have the experiences you describe, and would not be surprised to see them in use within the next 10 years.
