Tips for the transition of leaving the day job to home business job?

I've started my own VA home business. I am still at the (gasp) 9-5 day job, although I can take time here and there, I truly want to focus my time to my business. Can anyone share with me the easiest way to make this transition.
I cannot, at this time just quit, I am considering going to a more part time basis which would be beneficial tho.
Any feedback from fellow Virtual Assistants is greatly appreciated.

I think the most important part to working at home is setting office hours. I am the worst offender of just "quickly" checking my email and then an hour later leaving the office.

Also, it's important to focus on results oriented activity. Not just a nice clean office, but doing things that create the business you want/need!

It's somewhat difficult to answer your question without knowing some specifics about your day job, but here are some suggestions.

I understand you already have a home business so I'm not trying to sell you anything. Just some points to ponder:

1. If your day job is "portable", it's nice to transition by asking your employer if you can accomplish some of the tasks in your home office. That way you can get the feel for working at home while still collecting the paycheque.

2. Working at home requires much dedication and focus. It's a wonderful way to live (I have been working at home for decades) and the beautiful part is that I'm home. That's also the most challenging part. Home means tv, kids, laundry, house cleaning, cooking, etc. Make sure you use a day planner and structure your day so that your work at home actually gets completed.

3. Let others know you are working from home. This also means your family. Talk to them about it. Just because you are working at home doesn't mean you can jump in the car to pick them up after basketball practice. Make sure they understand that you are still "working" even though you are at home and that your income depends on concentration on the project.

4. Network with other people that work at home. One of the big downfalls to working at home is the feeling of isolation. If you move from a busy office to a home office, the noise, activity and fellowship disappears instantly. Make sure you plan a portion of your day for interaction with other humans.

5. Keep a regular schedule. Sleeping late and trying to get the first few hours accomplished while still in pyjamas doesn't work. Get up, get dressed and prepare for a day of business in your home office.
