Is there a free VPN for non -business efforts?

My father oftend ask me to resolve problems on his computer.I'd like to do it on my computer from my house. We both have DSL via ATT/SBC but we are unable to use remote asistance even if all firewalls are down. Yes, I'd liked the solution to that as well. However,
I want a permanent connection as well( virtual private network)

I dont know how good these are but either they work or they dont in my experience. Good luck

This is the only one I know of:

http://openvpn.net/

VPNs are a money-maker, so you won't find a lot of 'freeness' in the market

Free? Hmmm. Try using remote desktop that comes with xp pro. But you have to open port 3389 in your router for it to work. Or you could get "pc anywhere by symantec. Or you could buy routers for both you and your father that have built in vpn ( ex. smcbr18vpn )

A free solution for remote support is RealVNC software found at http://www.realvnc.com/ . Please take a look at the details http://www.realvnc.com/download.html to see that the free version is not secure, but it may be enough for your needs. Dad would install the server on his machine and you would install the client. He should go to Windows services on his computer and set the VNC service to start manually so that it does not start automatically when the pc boots up. You may want to select a specific port for the software to use, and open that port on your firewalls when using the software.

yes. There are several thing you need to do to make thsi work outsid eof the VPN issue.

first, you need to connect to his machine and with ATT/SBC the Ip will change as it is a dynamic IP. If you just want to do this once its not a big issue as he can do a ipconfig and tell you his IP.

if you want to do it often than use www.dyndns.com this will give you an domai name to always connect to.

Now, Id use the free version of www.realvnc.com

instal the server on his can the client on yours and your done.
