What's the aversion to Best Answer??

Why are so many people averse to naming a Best Answer, and instead put answers to a Vote?

I understand going to vote if you get several good answers and can't decide, or several crumby answers and can't comfortably name any of them "best."

But when a person goes to the trouble of researching and supplying THE best answer (such as a news article if someone is looking for a specific article, or a link to a business if someone is trying to track down a business), and it is the ONLY answer (or only good answer), why don't people do the virtual courtesy of saying "Thank You" by naming it Best Answer?

I'm not a vote whore, but I don't understand why people are so ungracious.

Can you think of reasons?

Clarification: I am particularly interested when you submit the ONLY answer (and a good one at that!), and the question is then put to Vote - it's my understanding that if the question receives only one answer, the Asker then must either choose Best Answer or put it to Vote, or the entire question is deleted. Therefore, the Asker has purposefully chosen to go to Vote instead of selecting your Best Answer. (Does this make sense?)

Laziness. They're doing it for a report or whatever. They get the good answer, and then the theory is that they want to leave it open another day just in case. The problem is that they forget/are too lazy to come back, so it gets left to the 1 week expiration.

They changed that recently with the No Best Answer option. So, if there's only one answer, then it goes to a vote automatically. Before, the questions would just stay open. Report It

It's because yahoo automatically puts it to vote unless a best answer is chosen. Report It

I wish I knew. Lazy, forgetful, disrespectful of others time and efforts? Take your pick.

My favorites are the ones that ask for an opinion from a certain group of people then choose someone who is obviously not from the requested group. You know the "I'm not [insert group here], but. . ." especially when I spend a lot of time researching the answer - and AM from that group.

Sometimes people give stupid, subpar answers. I'm not going to reward them for that!

Hi! I don't usually come on Yahoo! Answers, so the questions I ask usually get put to a vote because I tune in so infrequently....I don't CHOOSE to put it to a vote, it automatically goes to a vote after I don't choose a best answer for a while (because I rarely come on the website).

I think that people simply forget to go back to their questions, or they don't care, and the questions go to vote automatically.
