To be a Virtual Assistant, do I need to be certified?

I've had over 7 years of experience as an Executive Administrative Assistant and I'm interested in pursuing a new career as a Virtual Assistant. I've done a lot of research regarding this industry, but I'm not certain about required certifications. I believe in coaching and continuing education, but are certifications a must have in order to be a VA?

No. You don't need to be certified to become a virtual assistant. I know many virtual assistants (and I use one myself) that have not been certified and yet have thriving businesses

Virtual assistance is still a relatively new concept that not many people know what it is; the business is still evolving. Even the organizations giving certifications are not as well recognized compared to other types of businesses that require certifications.

However, certification does have its advantages:

- It adds more credibility to you and your business. Even if the client has no idea where the certification come from, the fact that you are certified means that your skills are up to par with what is required in the industry
- Allows clients to trust you more because you adhere to acceptable ethics in your industry
- Shows that you have the necessary skillset and experience

Certification is not necessary, but it can be an effective marketing tool and a way to earn the trust of potential clients. It certainly has its advantages, though you can still operate a VA business even without certification

you need to be Virtual, but you're real. It won't work out. Sorry.

Hi! I have done quite a bit of research about it as well. No, you don't have to be certified.

What is more important is your experience. Being certified give s you advantages, and also it would also be nice if you become a member of VA association in your area.

Guy above me is correct. This is a fairly new concept and has been accepted warmly specially by smaller companies as they save a lot of money when they hire VA's.

Good luck and you are definitely on the right track.
