What is the difference between level-3 switch and a router? |
We use a Cisco Catalyst 5500 user switch which the admin people call a V-lan or virtual Lan. It gives out IP addresses for DHCP I think, but they don't call it a router. What does a router have that a Level-3 user switch doesn't have or vice-versa. What are the benefits or drawbacks of a level-3 switch. A Layer 3 switch and a router are very similar. Normally, switches make routing decisions at Layer 2 (hardware layer), while a router makes routing decisions at Layer 3 (network layer). When the Layer 3 decision making is incorporated into a switch, this makes the switch function very similar to a router. However, since the switch can also operate at Layer 2 and can route using specialized hardware built into the backplane, in many cases the Layer 3 switch can exceed the performance of a router. |
