How do I create a Home Network for file sharing?

I have an XP media desktop and I would like to make a home network for file sharing with my new Vista Laptop.
I have DSL and the internet works fine, I have never made a home network before and I'm having issues with connecting the two computers.

I created the network on the Vista laptop, and I'm trying to figure out how to get the two computers connected. I'm doing a "VPN" (Virtual private network) connection and I had to put in the IP addresses which are simular because they are on DSL and the laptop connects wirelessly to the desktop's internet.

Everytime I try to connect it says:

ERROR 800: "Unable to establish the VPN connection. The VPN server may be unreachable, or security parameters may not be configured properly for this connection"

???

I have no idea what I'm doing so if anyone can give me some really detailed instructions that would be fantastic.

You don't want a VPN, I think you misunderstand what it is. VPN's are used for business purposes such as an employee accessing the corporate network from their home computer. This requires specialized hardware and software and is way too advance for what you want to do. You simply want your home computers networked to share files. This can be done by connecting your PC's to a switch either hardwired or wireless, then running Windows network setup wizard on each PC. That should do the trick.
