I can't get a title for the car I bought and the dealer has skipped town! What should I do? |
I bought a used Ford from a local used car dealer. He gave me a temporary title and registration. After the 3 month period was up he hadn't sent me the official title. I called over many many many times and they kept saying it had been lost, or they would have it in a couple days, or their girl at the DMV didn't come in, yada yada yada. This went on for over two months. In the meantime I've gotten 2 tickets for driving an unregistered vehicle. The DMV was no help and told me I had to get the registration from the dealer. Well, I went back one more time and they've skipped town! No cars on the lot and the office is boarded up! What am I supposed to do? I can't register the title and the DMV won't issue me one. What if the car is stolen? Am I totally screwed? No you're OK. First thing to do is look up a paid DMV registration service, then the best course is probably to do a private lien sale (not a very common way but legal way to get the title.) Yes you are screwed, but don't get mad. Get even. Grab a lawyer and go to town on the neglegent butts. Be sure to sue them for all the lawyer fees as well. They may have skipped town, but that business license was issued to somebody and that's the person you need to find. G'luck. |
