Would accepting a temp non-legal position hurt my chances in finding fulltime legal employment?

I am a recent Law School graduate and member of the state bar where I would like to practice.

However after months of interviewing I have yet to land a permenant position with a legal office .

I have been offered a temporary non-legal position out of state but I am worried that accepting that position would give legal employers in my state the wrong impression.

This depends... if you need the income take the position. However, if by some grace you are ok financially I would suggest that you offer your services pro bono for a non-profit. By doing this you earn relevant legal experience, while simultaneously helping your community. Both of which will play favorably towards you securing a position in the legal profession.

If you decide to take the position, continue to apply for positions in the legal field. If asked (which I doubt - because people understand the concept of living) why you took the position be honest. I found myself in a similar situation and I landed on my feet.

I'm sure they've seen this before. Taking such a job should not hurt you since anybody can understand that you have to make a living and possibly start paying back some student loans.

What is the position? Is it something where you will develop a background that could be valuable as a lawyer? If you work in a bank, the banking background could be an asset. If you work in a corporate and learn how corporate culture operates. See if the job has something you could add some spin to for your resume. Lots of lawyers hold all sorts of esoteric jobs before they become lawyers.

NO...you have to support yourself...and...you may like the move...go for it...
