I lost my social security card...if I go to the SS office, can they issue me a temporary one?

I want to go get my drivers liscence, but I need my social security card..if I got to the social security office, can they issue me a temporary replacement one?

I used to work for the SSA. You cannot get a temporary one. You must go to their office and file for a replacement. You must take proof that you are who you are. Last I knew you needed two forms of documentation to prove your identity.
Do not order on line at some of the scam internet sites. They will charge you. There is no charge for a replacement card through the government. But be careful about losing your card. You may only replace it ten times in your lifetime. Legal name changes do not count towards this replacement count.
You said you lost your card, so this info is assuming this is a replacement card. You need more info for a new card.

No. You'll need to get it replaced. They don't provide temporary cards. Fill out the application (www.ssa.gov) and send it in. You should get your new card in about 2 weeks.

You can go to the office and get a new one. My husband had his wallet stolen and he got a new one and when I got married I had to get a new one that has my married name. You still get to keep your ssn.

They'll give a reciept for getting one, not a temporary one but one for a replacelment or they might give you a new number. But you get something saying that you do have one on record.

If you have proof of citizenship, they will print out a peice of paper verifying your ss# which satisfies employers. I'm not sure if the BMV will accept it but I think they will. It usually takes about two weeks to get a replacement card in the mail after you have gone down and applied. You will need a birth certificate or passport -- and then something with proof of your identity like a student id.
