Resignation from a temporary job?

I had a quick question. I would like to resign from my current job, which is a temporary job. My contract says I should give one day's notice, which is a bit ridiculous considering the company it is and the responsabilities I have been given. In normal circumstances, i would give more notice, but have been offered a job to start two days later, hence I have no choice. How do I come about "resigning". I feel a bit silly "handing my resignation" if I'm simply on a temporary contract. Thenagain, I'm not sure a simple face-to-face "Hi I won't be here tomorrow" would suffice. Are there any ways of quitting an important-position office based work? A speedy response would be highly appreciated

I would still give a notice. See if you cannot get your new employer to start you one day later; explain to them that you are currently on a temporary assignment and you would like to give them a days notice to be fair. Most places will accept this; it shows that you are responsible and are not out to just up and leave on a whim.

Also, what if you need this agency for another position in the future? or for a reference? Try and give them the additional day that they are asking- don't burn any bridges.

Definitely put it into writing and thank them for the opportunity; as the company is more apt to give you a good reference when they report back to the temporary agency. Since it is a temp position, they should understand as well.

To tell your supervisor at the temp job is no problem. Tell them plainly that your last day is whatever. Temping works both ways. Its easy to get a temp worker to start and equally easy for the temp to bail out.

Telling your temp agency supervisor is another thing. Make sure its ok. Some temp agencies will put you on the back burner if you do this. Sometimes you won't get more assignments.

So don't worry about the people you're reporting to. remember, they're not paying any benefits for you. Don't feel bad about leaving, its your right. Just make sure you handle the situation with the agency correctly.

Be truthful. Tell them that some time ago you applied for this position and that it has been offered to you to accept in a very short time span of two days. Explain that you have always given sufficient notice when ending an assignment however, they have not left you with that option to do this since this offer is very time sensitive. You don't want to miss the opportunity that has been offered to you. Tell them this is a career move that you have waited a long time for.
