Temporary car plate expiring and no replacement? |
Hi all. I bought a car about 20 days ago from a dealer in New Jersey. I however live in Virginia. Dealer said that he will send me the title and the plates by mail and he gave me a temporary window sticker plate. This will expire tomorrow and I still have not received the actual plates. Dealer said that he cannot do anything as it is the Virginia plate office that is delaying them. What should I do apart from waiting? Can I use a friend's plates (as he has extra ones) meanwhile? Or would that get me into a trouble (him as well)? State laws may vary, but in my experience of living in a few different states, as far as I know you are respoinsible for getting your own plates through your department of motor vehicles. As to "borrowing" your friends plates- not advisable. If you are stopped and the plates don't match the vehicle description (as on record through the DMV) one or both of you will be in trouble. Never use someone elses,as that is against the law. You could call the police station and ask this question, but probably within the week yours will come. If not, I'd make a trip to the local police station and get a sticker note to carry to show that you are in the process of getting your tags. If nothing else, do nothing until if stopped, and then explain just as you have done here. But DO NOT USE ANYONES other than your own. That is criminal. Just keep driving then. If you get stopped, tell them what happened. They can verify your info. Contact the DMV in VA and tell them what has transpired. You may be able to supply them with the paperwork showing you purchased the vehicle and enable them to issue you another temporary registration or an extension until the paperwork is processed. The dealer in Jersey may have submitted the paperwork, but who knows how long after the sale it was submitted. DO NOT use other plates! What has happened so far is something out of your control and not something that the court will ding you for (if you get pulled over and cited.) Bummer. You can't illegally attach someone else's plates, and you can't renew the temp. |
