Please see question and answer re; dentures from pbogni1950?

Thank you for your answer but now my question is: Why do I look like bugs bunny? It is so bad that I won't return to work. The dentist told me this would be taken care of in aprox. 6 months when I get my final denture. I have allowed for swelling but this is rediculous. I am not a dental expert but I do have common sense. As you noted it was a technician that did the intial impressions. I didn't feel he was compitant at the time and I even mentioned it to my partner when I came home. I feel like the dental office should remake my temporary denture at no charge to me. They told me I could pay for my standard denture to be made ($600.00) but due to gum shrinkage I would probably have to replace it again within a year. I cannot afford this nor do I feel it is my responsiblity to do so. Obviously the initial fitting was improper. Shouldn't they at least be responsible for making me a temporary denture that looks presentable? I can't even go in public the denture protudes so badly.

Where I live Technicians cannot practice Dentistry. Taking impressions is work the Dentist should do. Making immediate dentures is rarely practical. All of the teeth on said arch should be removed and bone trimmed at least 6 weeks prior to making impressions. Some public workers insist on immediate replacement, understanding there will be pain and extra expense. Going this route, it is best to remove all posterior teeth, leaving only the 6 anterior teeth and wait 6 weeks before taking impressions. When the Denture is constructed in the lab, there is no reason the aesthetics cannot be duplicated, if that is what the patient wants. I am assuming this is an Upper Denture of which you are speaking. Some modification may be required to make the Upper to occlude and function with what you have on the lower arch. All in all you should look no worse and hopefully better that when started.

First of all, I don't understand why you need another denture in 6 months... maybe a reline, since your gums will shrink, but certainly not an entire new denture!

Some dental assistants are allowed to take preliminary impressions for the dentists...it depends on the state you live in (in the US)... in NY they have to be licensed.

Did you have a 'try-in' visit so you could approve the shade and shape/size of the teeth??? This should have been the last visit prior to the one when you received the denture...

The dentist should remake the denture for you at no cost if you're THAT unhappy with it... and the teeth should be made to a 'smaller, non-bunny' size... and a size that coordinates with your facial structure...

Best of luck to you~
