Office politics.............?

Recently, I became very good friends with a person I work with. Actually, she became my best friend. On Monday, she, myself (I am a supervisor) and the other supervisor were called into our manager's office for a big announcement. Our network director has decided to set up temporary shop and our facility. That meant that my friend had to give up her new office and move back to her old office. Our manager and director asked us if we had a problem with the moving and I said no. Well now she's angry with me and won't speak to me because she says that instead of saying I didn't have a problem with the move, I should have not said anything at all. I forgot to mention, my friend's office is right next door to my office currently. Was I wrong and should I go apologize to her? Or wait until she gets done pouting and decides to talk to me???

Well, I don't think you need to apologize, but I think you two need to talk it out. She is probably disappointed about having to move back into the older office, and with your friendship, maybe she expected you to "just know" that and wished you had spoken up. Personally, I don't think it would have been appropriate for you to speak on her behalf when she was right there. She should have spoken up for herself at that point and not put it on you after the fact.
If she values your friendship, she should just get over it, after all, it's only temporary, right?

Good luck, office politics are always hard...

talk to her

You were right to stay out of it. Even though she is your friend it is not your place to get involved. Rule number one for office politics is stay neutral to everything and don't develop any sexual relations with people you work with. So tell her that you have to work there too and that it isn't your place to defend her ideals even though you treasure her friendship. She may be mad right now but she will get over it and if she is a good friend you will work through this. Give her some space and when she is ready she will talk to you again. Tell her you have a rule that you don't get involved with other people's issues at work because you need your job and don't want to jeopardize it.

Time heals all wounds no matter how deep they are, eventually they heal.
You had a right to defend your position, as did she and the other person. Would you be offended if it was you who was asked to vacate your office? It would sting and hurt you a bit I'm sure. She is probably feeling the same way, as a supervisor that doesn't get the same respect as the others. Suggest to your supervisor that the air get cleared so the productivity doesn't suffer and all feelings are soothed. Best wishes and good luck.
