National insurance numbers?

could someone/anyone please help me,,i have a friend with 2 national insurance numbers,,the original,,and a temporary one,,its been 4 years and still hm tax office has been unable to rectify this,,when he calls,he is unable to pass the security test at the begining of the phone call,,and the call is ended,, by the tax office,,,please could some one advise me on the next step to take thankyou

When I worked for the Revenue, staff couldn't actually amend the National Insurance numbers shown in their records. It had to be done by the National Insurance Office at Newcastle. The only thing his tax office could do would be to delete his record, and set up another.
It is unlikely the TN number will have been used. That is usually only submitted by employers when they don't know the correct number, the Revenue don't use it. Because the numbers shown are the date of birth, that number could be used by several people. If the Revenue uses a temporary one as a reference number because the original is unknown, it is two numbers, followed by a letter, followed by 5 numbers. I am not sure if your friend has this or a number which is in the correct National Insurance number format of two letters, six numbers, and then sometimes another letter (but in his case, the wrong digits).
I am not sure if your friend has two tax records, one for each number. He would need to ask HMRC to check this. If I were him, I would call at a local tax office enquiry centre, and ask them to sort it. Take appropriate documentation showing both numbers. These days people on the phone lines don't get a lot of training on some of the more obscure queries, and this one needs an expert who knows what they are doing. I would also write to Newcastle, and ask for his National Insurance Contributions under both numbers to be checked and merged if necessary.

tell him to write to them and send the letter recorded delivery

Has he tried writing to them ?

see Darling

Write to them instead of phoning, they can't hang up then.

Yup get an accountant on to it.

They are useless - took them 4 years to sort out that somebody else was using my wife's.

Try to do it online.. but if it dosent work then go to the office directly. there are 3 or 4 offices in london.

You can't get a temporary NI number.

the one you get when you leave school [or 16] is with you for life.

he needs to go back with the original NI number which will confirm who he is and take it from there

how can his call be ended , can you expain ?

i was under the assumption that you kept your temporary number,

at a guess if thats wrong. the tax office should be aware your friends has two numbers ,, i do find this highly unlikely though, theres enough cheats in this country

If you know the current name of the company you may try searching here....http://www.insurance.arkansas.gov/is/com...

Ive had 2 national insurance numbers since i was 18 when i spoke to them about it they were going to sort it out straight away that was 7 years ago and i have now given up trying but at least i should be entitled to 2 pensions (i wish)

I've had problems talking to real people before when going through an automated service.
Press every number randomly on your phone, and you will eventually speak to a human being.

The temporary number " TN birth dates F..(for female) M (for male).." this method is used to give immigrants a number so that they can work..and is used as a stopgap until you are given a permanent number..The tax taken via the temporary number from the wages is held in a holding fund..and will not go towards your pension..until the tax office can marry the two together..your friend should contact the pension and tax offices..( these are two different offices..)and explain the situation giving all the work places that have used their temporary number..this should sort out any problems..When calling the offices don't press any numbers and just hold ..you will be put through to a "LIVE" operator..this way you avoid the security checks..if they ask for your ni number give the main one ..then explain about the other one..hope this helps..

Just keep using one of them and the insurance record will be intact. Dont mix them up. Eventually the tax office and social security will rectify it by deleting the one which is unused and merging the records. Stick with the original one if possible, as the other one is probably incorrect. I am sure there is a Client Identity Section within both govt agencies who will kindly amend the details if you write to them and explain who you are and include some identity verification , for example a birth certificate. You could possibly go to your local Police station and get them to verify the birth cert by checking your Passport against it. They could stamp the cert for you before you send it in to the Client Identity Section. As with all large organisations there are always some clerical errors which can produce duplicate id numbers, but usually there is some detail which is incorrect and this allows two records to exist for the one person. I would advise him to keep a copy of all correspondence as sometimes things go missing in the post.

Put your query in writing and quote both National Insurance numbers. Guarantee if your friend is legitimate you will get the problem sorted.
You should never try to sort out a problem like this over the telephone. Good Luck

What is all this nonsence about paying accountants?
Get your friend to write to HMRC stating the two numbers which are being used, his date of birth and his previous addresses. Ask them to confirm which number is correct and then ensure his employer is informed of it.
