Should I ask for lower rent, break the lease, or just ask to move to a different apartment?

My wife and I are renting a apartment until our house is finished being built. We thought the apartment was atleast good enough to stay in for the time being. The problem is the leasing office told us that we would be able to rent a washer and dryer when we moved in but that is not going to happen. The washer and dryer hookup is in the bathroom and the door for the bathroom is to small for the washer and dryer to fit. I called the leasing office about my problem. They said the door should be 30 inches which would be big enough . The door was actually only 23 inches. The smallest washer and dryer I could find was 23 7/8 inches. The leasing office just told me that I couldn't get a washer and dryer and offered us nothing to accommodate. The winter is coming and walking in the snow to the laundry room was not something we planned on doing while living in this temporary home. Should I ask for lower rent, break the lease, or just ask to be moved to a different apartment?

I feel the leasing office agent should be aware of the dimensions of that bathroom door. They just wanted to lock in a quick lease arrangement with you.

If there is another unit available in the building with the proper door dimensions to accomidate your washer and dryer, I would just move to that unit to avoid the hassle of starting all over again looking for another place, and then the hassle of breaking the lease.

If there's not another suitable unit, then ask for the lease to be negotiated for a lower rent, but be sure all the paperwork is in order as such.

If that doesn't work, then you will have to try and break the lease based on what's known as a "Breech of Contract", provided you can prove somewhere in your lease that you were told you could bring in the rented appliances.

With winter approaching, try to pick the easiest solution. I wish you the best.

Your first problem is whether the management office gave you the information about the washer dryer in writing or orally. If it was in writing, you've got grounds to break the lease and/or ask for lower rent. If it was oral, your standing on thin ice.

is that washer/dryer situation is not in the lease itself than it is tough luck. if you break the lease they will come after you with fess and so on. The best thing to do in this case if it is not in the lease is to talk to the management company and see if anything can be done. If it is in the lease then they have breached the lease and there fore may have the option on moving to another apartment. Talk it out or if you dont mind having to pay the fees then move.

To me, I consider that a major oversight, and material representation.

They should allow you to move to another unit, TRANSFER FEE FREE, so you can get a standard size washer and dryer.

Or...they need to provide one for you in your current place.

If the issue about the washer and dryer is in writing, they may have violated the terms of the lease. Write them a letter and await a written response. You can have the door in the bathroom widened. You can walk in the snow to do your laundry. You could lose your deposit for breaking the lease. Changing apartments is an option. How long will it take for your house to be done? If it isn't that long, handle it.
