I had a bad experience at a temping job. What does this mean?

I recently started a temporary job. The agent told me that the job will be on going which means that she didn't know when it would end.

When I first started the job, the manager told me she had a bad experience with the temping worker I had replaced. She told me that she refused to do the work, rolled her eyes and didn't turn up the next day.

Anyway, I got on with the job and did everything I was asked to do but when I came in for the second day, she told me that she had phoned my agency and told them that no more temps were needed and that it would be my last day.

I found this strange because it had only been two days. What do you think was going on? This was an office job by the way.

Unfortunately 'temps' don't normally have the same rights as permanent staff - and the contract can be terminated by either side without a period of notice.
Having said that, it was a little unprofessional of your supervisor to dispense with you so soon, particularly as you did your best and all that you were asked.

I've had office temping jobs in the past, and they do vary from place to place - the advantage of them being you have the power to walk out and not come back if it's really truly awful!

Good luck for your future placements though - with your professional and sensible attitude I'm sure there's a much more suitable and grateful employer out there who would be only too happy to have your services.

I'm guessing you didn't fit into her clique!

i expect they've recruited someone internally, and don't want to pay agency fees....

This is a well known ploy to get you to do your best in the expectation of having a long term placement. It's not always fun being a temp;o(

nothing count youself lucky u got paid & move on to the next temping job, thats life.

I worked for a guy who had (10) employees in the position in less than (6) months. It was Always the employees fault he let them go (according to him). He was the biggest JERK I ever worked for.
I was Fired for looking for another job while employeed there.
Some managers are insufferable A**HOLES and are not happy with anyone.
All I can say is keep plugging along. I found a job with a much better company for a LOT more money.
Keep the Faith

Don't worry they probably hired someone internally. As long as you put in your best you have nothing to worry about. See it as their lost not yours....after all it doesn't sound like a nice company to work for anyways.

The company that you worked for decided not to use temps anymore becauase of what the first temp did before you. Your manager thought that you would perform the same way as the previous temp that you replaced. So, it is best to contact your recruiter and talk to him or her about it and wait for another assignment. I would continue looking for something permanent because temp agencies are not there to help you look for work while you are not doing anything yourself about finding the right job. Good luck

In temporary jobs they often tell you that it is ongoing employment when it isn't. I was once told that I would have a chance to be hired full time but the company where I was sent denied that there was ever a possibility.

It could be that they hired internally or they just wanted to get every drop of blood for the two days you were there. I have had that experience with temp work too.

Wow.. this is interesting. I'm a temp (intern) right now... everyday I wonder if they're ever going to hire me permanent or not, but I can't count on it. I met a girl who just interviewed with our competitor she said they pretty much let you temp and see how you work and if they like you they keep you, o i assume thats how it is here too (and they do hire temps btw). But thats really no guarantee... im tired of wondering but oh well i'll find out next year I guess.

-- good point, hazeleyes. they tell me the SAME thing here. I don't trust them.. I have to see it to believe it.

Welcome to the wonderful world of temping. I work for temping agency as well. To be honest with you the agency is going to string along as long as they can. There is no guarantee of how long you will be on an assignment. The company will tell you that they are hiring just to get quality work of you and then toss you aside like some dirty underwear. My boss tells me that oh he would love to hire me permanentblah blah blah. Even though I 've seen him fire quality workers. So I play along with him and do my work like I'm supposed to, but I still look for employment else where.

It probably only means that they hired someone permanently for the position. Temp jobs are really unpredictable. Don't worry about it. If there had been a problem with you, they would have said something to your agent.

Don't worry about it; **it happens.
