I just got laid off without any notice, was what my boss did wrong?

I worked a the headquarters of a big food corporation for 6 weeks. It was a temporary position with an "unkown" period of time. I told my boss that if he cuts me, just to let me know about 2 weeks ahead, and he said that is what he usually does. I got the job through the company not a temp agency. Yesterday, which is Friday, 10 minutes before Im about to leave he calls me in his office and tells me thank you your job is over, here is your check. I was like, huh. I felt speechless that I didnt even ask for a reason. I get along with my coworkers and they were shock when I told them the news. I recieved no notice at all. Not too many people in my department like my boss, he is not caring, and does not have people skills. Just graduated college 2 months ago and now I am unemployed.

no

Uhm, welcome to the world?

In a Temp position, notice is not required. Although legally he did nothing wrong, morally he sucks....Good Luck!

It was tacky to be sure but you really don't have any recourse given your scenario.

That's the real world. Life is not fair. Pick yourself up and move on. That's what adults have to do.

No, if you're a temp, you don't matter. You're not human, you're just a worker, and he can legally fire you at any time for any reason whatsoever. I've spent plenty of time as a temp at many different jobs, and the only thing you can do is move on. Call the temp agency you used to get the job and see if they can get you another one. Good luck.

welcome to the jungle friend. he didnt do anything wrong. you are a temp thefore temporaily employed by his bussiness.

Some times it is 'Last hired, first fired'. Your boss probably didn't know until just before he told you. Sometimes you are the last to know, and the first to be done.

You will be just fine. Get right back into the game.

The first year that I was out of school, I had 7 different temp jobs. It was actually kind of interesting to see the real world.

YA THAT WAS SCREWED OF HIM, BUT WELCOME TO THE REAL WORLD

If you live in a "right to work" state, they can terminate you with no explanation at all, unless you were discriminated against illegally.

Pretty classless, but probably not illegal.

As rude as it is - In California, it's legal. Many public companies are "at will" companies, which means you can quit "at will" or they can let you go "at will".

The right thing to do would have been to have your agency contact you in the evening and let you know your assignment was complete. If it were me, I'd ask my agency if they could share the reason with you, because if it was something you did wrong, you want to make sure not to make the same mistake again. Make it sound like you want to take something positive and beneficial from this.

Good luck to you always.

As others here have already said, the guy was a jackass, but what he did was fully within his right as an employer.

sorry..but no dont give up hope try and find another job, there will be better days

I worked for a man for fifteen years. He retired and sold me the business. I hired two more employees. After a few months I needed to let one go. I though I would treat him the way I would want to be treated if I were getting let go.I told ray on monday morning that I would need to let him go. I told him that it would be in two weeks and if he needed time off to apply or have an interview he could work late or on satuday so he could still get his 40 hours. He did fair the monday , he did poor on tuesday and complained to all the other workers making them unhappy , and he walked off the job wednesday at lunch after he pissed everybody off. Now if I have to let somebody go I do it when I hand them there check on friday. Even if I made the decision on monday I work them the full week.Sometimes you pay for mistakes other people make. Its not fair , but life is not always fair. I have never had an employee quit and tell me he is quitting , they just dont show up anymore.

It happens, and it won't be the last time.

The position was temporary, so he did nothing wrong.

Even if it were a permanent position, most states allow employers to fire "at will."

If it's temporary with unknown time, I think he can fire you anytime he wants...but...it's a wrong thing to do it without any prior noitce, especially when he said he would do that...

You are young, I am assuming if just graduated college. You did nothing wrong. You have been out of college two months. You have the rest of your life to find a job. No need to look back, it was a learning experience and now move. I am sure it was hard for your boss to let you go.

I managed this communications company for quite some time. I have now changed jobs. One day 30 minutes before the shift to start. The vp faxed me a list of people she wanted fired. She said their stats were not good enough. There was 15 people on this list. She told me do not let them punch in. Make them go in the break room. Take one at a time into your office and tell them and have them sign the exit papers. Then I was to walk them out the door so they had not any contact with anyone else. I was told to tell them there personal belongings from their cubeicle would be mailed to them. I almost quit before I had to firel all of those people. I felt bad for them. and after they were all gone. I went in my office shut the door and cried. Life is not always fair. I later found out this was not about stats or performance, it was about the budget. But by firing these people they could not get unemployment. You said not to many people in your dept like your boss. Hello............ he is not your boss you are no longer working there..... and by saying not many others like him and he has no people skills is that a reason for you to justify why you were let go. It was a temp job. I feel bad but you are new out of college and will find work.

how can people say he is a jack *** for letting the guy go. Maybe he had no choice like I did. Maybe it came from higher up. Maybe his work performance was lacking......
