Telephone answering 'machine' software for PC?

I sued to have wonderful software when I used a voice/fax/modem in the old days. Trying to find out if there is software that will work on the pc off landline to record messages, check id, record calls and usual stuff? Using broadband, no old fashioned modem with connector bit for phone. so if there is such a thing that will work - how would it get the 'phone' end connected?????

thanks for that answer but I am not wanting to use / receive voip but rather want to receive bog-standard landline calls via my pc but have no modem other than a router ?

Now days, most phone and VoIP service providers include voicemail options which alleviate the need for external answering machine. Many VoIP services now include voicemail (same as answering machine) as part of the service at no extra costs (unlike the phone companies).
