Why does my telephone make an answering machine noise after not being picked up after several rings?

I have the Call Answer temporarily turned off (which is planned), but when someone calls, the phone will ring several times and then instead of ringing, the noise becomes one of sounding like you've reached an answering machine line instead of a phone line? I just want the phone to keep ringing until they hang up. Any ideas? Thanks.

can you switch answering machine to off....

Try changing the number of rings, that you receive, before the answering machine "would" kick on. Maybe, instead of 5 rings, turn the setting to 2 rings.
