When the telephone was first invented people didn't say, "Hello" when answering...What did they say? Alexander Graham Bell proposed that they say, "Ahoy". Their number. "Greenfield 331" or something. Back then people said their area "Greenfield" followed by their specific phone number "331." Today you would answer, "655-5331." I believe they said there last name or family name like eg:Lawrence residence can i help u They must of said "Hi" to each other. Or said their name when answering the phone. One of the first suggestions was Ahoy (you know like at sea) The typical response was Ahoy. ring....ring...ring..ring... They stated their last name. They said " who are you calling?' In the beginning on the phone era, they only had party lines. Each area had to share the same number. So your neighbor would of had the same number as you. |
