What is the lifespan an average telephone compared to the lifespan of a telephone 20 years ago? And why?

These days telephones can be cheap and so complicated that they can't keep up and just break down. But what is it actually that causes this (like, in detail) and how long does it take to happen?

2-3 years. they're designed not to last that long because more new features keep coming out every year and since Ma Bell isn't a controlled monopoly like it was 20-30 years ago when only It made the telephones themselves,as they were designed to last a long time,being a regulated utility as it were.
