Has anybody on an ADSL service used their old 56k fax/modem to send and receive faxes whilst surfing the web?

I have an old 56k fax modem and would like to connect it back up to my phone line and use it as a computer fax and telephone answering machine. My ISP tells me it can't be done now that I'm on an ADSL service.
Has anybody out there tried it and did you succeed?

Actually yes i have done it. You will need a filter on the telephone cable connecting the fax machine(computer) to the wall. It worked w/o fail for me nothing to it.

Your ISP is trying get more money out of you - Let me guess, they said you would need to purchase "xxxxblah-blah-blahxxxx"
Fax machines(whether being used through computer software, or not) have nothing to do with the Internet - it is good old standard telephone service. You already have phone line filters to connect your phone - set it up just like the good old days when we all used dial-up.
And, yes I have sent and received faxes while surfing the web.

Yes you can - as long as you filter the line. Do not use the fax program in WinXp, however as you may not be able to receive a fax. You can use programs like quicklink and winfax. I have used the old Win3.1 quicklink program on a Win2k machine with no problem so if you have it hanging around, use it.

yes...all the time. thats why i kept the dial up modem, so i can ues the windows fax program

A splitter in required to separate the voice & the data...the voice part can then be used as the line in to the fax/modem...and you are ready to go...it will definitely work...
