Schools against family values?

When we get a letter from the school it is addressed to my wife, when I answer the telephone from the school they ask for my wife. At the start of a new term at school my wife has to sign a form in the school to say that I am allowed to pick the children up from school.

When my wife asked why this was the case the head teacher replied "Because a lot of children at this school do not have a dad, they would feel left out"

Great answer huh?

As a teacher, I think this teacher is misinformed. (Let me preface this by saying it is CRAZY that your wife has to sign to allow you to pick up your children) When I call homes, I generally ask for the woman because a) she is more likely to be at home and b) a child who is in a broken home is MORE LIKELY to live with his/her mother. It has nothing to do with children feeling "left out;" it is simply a matter of logistics. That being said, make sure the teacher and school know if you are the parent to contact.

I have heard of a lot of schools doing away with anything related to Father's Day, and I think this is very sad. As a supporter of traditional family values, I try to celebrate Father's Day just as I do Mother's Day, and if we are creating some sort of card or gift, I make sure to tell the children on BOTH days that if they don't have a father or a mother, they can make it for another special woman/man in their lives. All of this PC garbage only makes our society less and less traditional.

thanks Rebecca M, It is good to read a teachers point of view.

Thats crap!

Thats really stupid. I don't think they are neccessarly "against" family values...they just have a really stupid system going on. You should not have to have permission from your wife to pick up your children from school?!!? Very Strange...

I would not take this to heart but if it really bothers you then go to the superintendent and talk to them.

Wow. Are they this sympathetic towards kids who don't have moms? If they are this idiotic on this issue, perhaps they are lacking in sensitivity in other areas as well. Perhaps it's time to look for another school?

Yes. Super in fact. Generally the women are the ones dealing with the kids, so the males are a little at a disadvantage by the nature of most men allowing the wife to be in charge of those "school" things. Couple that with the fact that so many are divorced. women generally get the school week custody, so they are naturally more involved with the schools. To do this in order to prevent some from feeling left out seems absurd. The school need not concern themselves with such. That would be an issue addressed at home, if necessary.

That's why I stick with the private schools. Public schools have become warzones and cesspools.

You need to sue the school system for discrimination.

When the majority of children have a mother, but not necessarily a father living with them nowadays, it's the compassionate thing to do to have the mother be the primary communicator because the children have to give their guardian things to sign and stuff all the time and you don't want to remind innocent children over and over and over again that their father left them and doesn't love them or whatever the case may be. Why is it a problem that the school wants to go through her instead of you? Seems like a pretty sexist remark to me, like you think that because you're a man, you should be the 1st person they come to, despite the fact that SHE grew him in her BELLY and birthed him. Also, with all the single mothers nowadays and estranged, shady fathers running around, I would be happy to send my son to a school that required the same thing. If you just think for a minute, you'll realize the school is trying to do what's best for the children. Look past your inflated, wounded ego, please.
