Disabled, Anyone On Benefits Or In A Rut....?

Okay this is a free for all, but no swearing or racist comments please.....

To anyone disabled, would you consider working, maybe not hourly but as and when you could, maybe someone with a computer could type National Trust letters emailed to them, or answer a telephone for childline.

What I am trying to get at is instead of people saying what they can't do, lets have ideas of what they could do, if their benefits were not going to be stopped because they would no longer be considered as disabled if they actually found something they could do, even enjoy, even get out of a rut.

If you thought of something you could do, then what is it, would you be happy to do it for your benefit, would you think your benefit should be topped up and if so by how much. Thank you for your input... <GB>

Yes. I am physically disabled and on anti-depressants. My GP signed me off as incapable of work and I really think that that's detrimental to my morale/self-esteem etc.

Like Spirit-Girl I tire quickly and, after a decade as a near recluse, I am quite phobic of mixing with people. However, I have passed qualifications in IT and would welcome the opportunity of home-based PC work. To do this for my current benefits would be quite acceptable to me.

Hi, i am disabled and i would love to work, but if i do anything i am in so much pain afterwards, i could probable do pc work for about a hour, then after that my fingers would not want to work or move.
I am also a great talker, so i could do phone work but again it would not be for more than a hour as i can not hold the phone for that long.
It is not that disabled people do not want to work, a lot of us can not because of our pain, i did go to the job centre and they more or less laughed at me, and said i was unemployable, as no one would want someone who could not gaurentee going to work each day, and not being able to do more than a hour at a time.

it depends on their disability i see lots of so called disabled people double parking in big cars that do not look disabled there is a lot of fraud aroud this area it drives me nuts that these people get my tax money there should be a lot more checks .These people take money from the real needy when they are caught they should face hefty fines

So are you going to wave a magic wand and make all these jobs?
RE: the parking in big cars, that's a stupid comment! Just because someone is disabled it doesn't mean they can't drive! Car size is unimportant too, what if they need to carry special equipment around? Even if they don't, they are entitled to drive what they like!

the truth is that there isn't work out there for 'able bodied' people, forget the disabled people ever getting a job!!

disabled people, people under 22 and over 50 will never find a job in the UK, maybe 1 or 2 will but 80-90% wont.

and your sugestions type National Trust letters emailed to them the person who is going to email them could type the letter insted of making things longer and answer a telephone for childline is a public funded service that runs with volunteers.

just some thoughts i had, if i was going to write what i really wanted i would get loads of negative thumbs, ignored by everyone and banend. lol

Depending on the person disability and ability it could be a great job for someone. I have a very mild disability so I am not at home all day and already have a job.

Second thing I hope you train those people or their would need some qualification in that field, children on help lines or what every would need the right advices. I wouldn't like an amature at the end of a line.

Referring to the double parking. It is not always obvious to
the naked eye if someone has a disability. Even physical
one. Then may only be able to walk so many meters.

I have Enough to Get by.

I am an example of this.

I was on incapacity benefit since 2001, when I had to give up my job in journalism due to a neurological illness.

I was only 23, and couldn't imagine doing nothing at all for the rest of my life. I did some voluntary work in counselling and support, did some courses at college etc - but at the end of the day I wanted to work.

It's not well known but whilst on incapacity benefit, you can work 16 hours per week - so I took up a small p/t job in a golf club as an administrator, and what a difference it made to my life.

Just last month, I took on a second part-time job and came off benefits altogether. I still have my medical condition and yes, one day it will deteriorate but in the meantime - I want to work for my own well-being.

I agree with you 100% - anything is possible with time and a little effort. To anyone who is thinking about this - IM me and I can tell you more about what help there is for disabled people looking to get into work. IMHO - it's the best thing anyone can do.

And to answer those who have already said, and who may well say about me - i can walk and i dont appear disabled but trust me, if you knew what Ive been through, saw the meds I take, and knew the problems I experience within my body due to my condition - you would understand better. Just because I drive, and because I don't use a wheelchair on a regular basis does NOT mean I'm not disabled.

Open your minds a bit - its this sort of attitude that destroys peoples morale.
