Argument for debate.?

Can anybody give a few good arguments (pro) to this statement:

"The telephone may not be answered by saying your name."

Its for a debate and I find it a ridiculous title but ya, if anybody has good arguments i'm all ears.

A preposterous statement from the begining. I have been in offices where it was common to answer the phone with your name, since all outside calls had already been routed by a phone receptionist, and all others were in-house calls anyway. Also, in the military, officers generally answer either with their name or their title, eg "Lt West,.." or "Officer of the deck,.." You cannot abslutely say it cannot be answered with your name. Don't sweat the topic,or its patently undefensible position, this is a practice exercise to teach you how to construct a debate. You can at best, give instances where it is not considered the polite way, but you have already lost, since your statement cannot be proven to be THE truth set.

Do you mean...you can't answer the phone and say, "This is john?" if so...:

1. It will put a greater divide between work & home life by not allowing the person to engage in work-like activities outside of work.

At work you answer the phone with your name because that number or extension is yours alone, and it saves the person the time of asking 'Is this so and so?'

But at home the phone is shared by the whole family, so you say 'Hello' and the person asks to speak to whoever he wants to speak to. Also it might be a crook or perv or something and you want to know who it is, maybe even hear what he wants, before you give him any information.

This is why you never leave a message on the answering machine like: "This is the home of Ignatz and Griselda Blotz at 1234 Cabbage Blossom Way. We are not home now, we're in Alaska for six weeks and our house is empty, and the code for the security system is 6224."

It's a company/district/community rule stated in our CC&Rs, local ordinance.

We amass considerable classified data; the rule protects identity disclosure.

We believe in total customer service, Instead, we use "Good Day, this is customer service how may I help you/direct your call etc.

Identity theft is avoided.

Exposure to law suits is minamalised.

Prevents telmarketers to obtain inside identity information.

Prevents stalking.

I don't know what the rules are for your debate, but here are a few thought sessions. Hypothetical this, ie what if this company is the CIA and the policy is to save lives.
good luck
