cant help on the tinting (i read that it filters out infrared light to reduce need for AC- but that mightnot be what youre looking for), but as far as fiber optics, total internal refelction is used to keep the light within the fibers so that it reflects back and forth down the fiber to its destination. its cheaper, takes less room, carries more... see the second website for more on fiber optics, and follow the link to "advantages" all your answers should be there. that website has some good info for physics classes. ;)
