My chemestry teacher asked us this crazy question for h/w but i have no idea what the answer it- pleas help?

The question is-
Imagine you are in a bath full of water. With you is an old fashioned telephone that gets its electricity supply from the telephone wires. Its maximum voltade is 8V, which is not big enough to kill you. How can you kill yourself with this phone.

He said the answer had to do with covalent, ionic or polar bonding (???) and also that when you died you would scream in time to the telephone ring.

Thanks PSUMeteo, but thats got nothing to do with atomic bonding so i dont think thats it.

The electrical current is essentially what kills you. However, for the current to flow there must be a certain amount of voltage. The voltage allows the electrons to flow through you in the bathtub so that the current can fibrillate your heart, freeze your muscles, and burn your skin.

The amount of current that flows through you would be equal to the amount of voltage applied between two points divided by the resistance between them (this is called Ohm's Law). The amount of voltage you get has to do with the resistance. Resistance opposes the flow of electrons.

So if you could decrease the resistance, you would reduce the opposition of the flow of electrons, and in turn increase the voltage. Since the voltage would be increased, so would the current it delivers (the maximum current would be dependent on the electrical device's power supply), and therefore, you would be at risk of dying of electric shock.

I do not suggest testing this experiment. Especially the last part.

Before you learn Chemistry, you must learn first the LANGUAGE AND SPELLING subject,it seems like you can't even spell correctly the chemistry and the voltage words.

Apparantly (according to Richard Morris) it's got something to do with the phone ringing at 50V which can kill you in water. Dunno about the bonding though.
