A man ran to a telephone and back in 15 minutes. His speed on the way to the telephone is 5m/s and his speed on the way back is 4m/s. Find the distance to the telephone?

note:( please state each step you did in your calculations get your answer).

Assuming that the initial distance between the man and the phone is x:
Time to get to the phone = distance/speed = x/5
Time to get back = distance/ speed = x/4
=> 15 * 60 (time in seconds) = x/4 + x/5
900 = 9x / 20
=> x = 2000 m

distance to phone must equal distance back
Time=15 min.
so time to phone=t and time back =(15-t)
d(one)=to phone=Rate*Time
d1=5m/s*t
d2=distance back=4m/s*(15-t)
convert units to m/min===
and set equal to each other
5*60m/min*t=4*60m/min*(15-t)
300t=240(15-t)
300t=3600-240t
540t=3600
3600/540=t=6+2/3 minutes
d1=300m*6.667
2000 m=distance
double check
2000m/300m/min=6.67min
2000m/240m/min=8.33 min
t1+t2=15 min
