Given the narrow (usable) audio bandwidth of a telephone transmission facility, a nominal signal-to-noise ratio (SNR, or S/N) of 56dB (400,000) and a distortion level of <.02%:

1. What is the theoretical maximum channel capacity (Kbps) of traditional telephone lines (POTS}

a. about 9,600 bits/second
b. about 14,400 bits/second
c. about 56,000 bits/second

2. What is the actual maximum channel capacity?

a. It will be somewhat higher than the answer in the previous question because Shannon鈥檚 formula does not account for recent findings from quantum mechanics (which was discovered well after Shannon鈥檚 time).

b. It will be the same as the answer in the previous question

c. It will be somewhat lower than the answer in the previous question because Shannon鈥檚 formula does not account for distortion.

the best help I can give you is the advice- the best way to figure this stuff out is to pull out your calculator and actually work out the answers.

So are the answers for the rest - crack the textbook, you paid enough for it!
