Do you think illegal immigration is a serious problem?

The latest telephone poll taken by the California Governor's office asked whether people who live in the southwestern United States think illegal immigration is a serious problem.

29% of respondents answered:
"Yes, this is a very serious problem."

71% of respondents answered:
"No es una problema seriosa."

Hey, ya' all. It's just a joke but at the same time it is a good joke because it forces us to look at how we all relate to the problem. We didn't cause it, employers looking for cheap labor did. Once again the american taxpayer is paving the way and bearing the burden of corporate profits.

Yes! The problem, though, is not with the immigrants but with two societies that systematically create the situation: one to the south that is corrupt and fails to address basic economic and social issues, and one to the north that continues to exploit these workers and their families.

AND ANOTHER THING! This idea that these immigrants are draining "our" social services or taking away "our" jobs is complete bs. I know many immigrants, some documented and some not, and they are by far the hardest working and most family-oriented people I know. They are doing the best they can for their families. These people are contributing more to our economy and to our society and to our culture than most of the overweight reactionaries who feel entitled to social services based on the coincidence of their birthplace. I wish every resident had to apply for citizenship based on merit - I am confident that 99% of the "illegals" would suddenly find themselves full citizens, and a large number of native-born folk would be out shopping for a new country!

Finally, the correct punchline of the joke, for the record, should be "No es un problema serio".

Ah ha, very funny! But yes it's a serious problem amongst many other serious ones. But you're talking about a human life, the greatest gift, and some people should stop and think about what they'd do if they were in a similar situation. I'm used to be being discriminated - look at me, I'm BLUE!

I think the answer to your question lies in were the poll was taken! California, in the SW of the state. Of coarse it came out with those numbers! My opinion is this. Yes it is illegal because the laws of the United States says that it is! Is it a problem, of coarse it is! The cost burden to the united states for welfare, medical and the other state hand outs that come out of our pockets says its a problem. Everyone makes this out to be a problem with Hispanics, but its not! We have immigrants from all countries, but the largest amount come from Mexico. Not to mention the national security issue of an usecure border to our north or south. I met my wife in Korea. It took 18 months to get her visa to come to the U.S. It took another 2 years for her to become a legal resident and then we got married. There is a process in place. Is it perfect? NO! Nothing is. But it is the process and to circumvent it for the benefit of a politician or a lobby party for cheap labor is wrong! Just my opinion.
