You know your telephone number (7 digits)

Take the first 3 digits
Multiply that by 80
Add 1
Multiply by 250
Add last 4 digits of phone number
Again add the last 4 digits of phone number
Minus 250
Divide them by 2

Surprised by the answer you get. What is that?

Not at all surprised. The result is your phone number. Look at it mathematically. Suppose your phone number is x - y, where the - isn't subtraction, but just the dash between x, a three-digit number, and y, a four-digit number. The described operations give you

((80x + 1)*250 + y + y - 250) / 2,

which can easily be reduced as follows:

(20000x + 250 + 2y - 250) / 2
10000x + y

And clearly this would be the original phone number in numerical form, since multiplying the three-digit number x by 10000 causes x to be followed by four zero digits so that when you add y you have the phone number (but without any punctuation between x and y). And good catch, pjpudge1414.

Just algebra. Follow what the first poster wrote and you will know how and why it works. There are many trick like this. People who do not know algebra are easily cheated :-)

It seems to be mathematically explainable . The mechanism involved is how to get a number double of a seven digit number. And that is the trick.
