In 1980, a typical telephone number in the USA contained seven digets several areas of the country now must use ten-digit telephone numbers, if the entire country follows, exactly how many different ten- digit telephone numbers are avaliable such that the first digit cannot be a 0 or 1 and the fourth digit cannot be a 0?

If all numbers are ten digits, the count is:
8 * 9 * 10^8
= 72 * 10^8.

There are 8 possibilities for the first digit, 9 for the fourth, and 10 for each of the others, provided there are no shorter numbers (such as emergency and public services).
