Can you explain this joke?

Sensitive Beer

Three hicks were working on a telephone tower - Steve, Bruce and Jed. Steve falls off and is killed instantly.
As the ambulance takes the body away, Bruce says, "Someone should go and tell his wife."
Jed says, "OK, I'm pretty good at that sensitive stuff, I'll do it."
Two hours later, he comes back carrying a case of beer.
Bruce says, "Where did you get that, Jed?"
"Steve's wife gave it to me," Jed replies.
"That's unbelievable, you told the lady her husband was dead and she gave you beer?"
Well, not exactly", Jed says. "When she answered the door, I said to her, 'You must be Steve's widow'."

I believe the joke goes:
You told the lady her husband was dead and she gave you beer?"
Well, not exactly", Jed says. "When she answered the door, I said to her, 'You must be Steve's widow'."
"No I'm not" she said.
And he says: "I'll bet you a case of beer that you are"

She's glad he's gone?

it makes no sence--maybe bcuz its about hicks??

She was rewarding him for giving her the news. They didn't have a good marriage.

I don't get it either...

um.. I don't know!!! Maybe he was a boozer so she gave away all his beer?

I suppose she's happy that her husband is dead, but I just can't point a finger at the whole beer part.

Wish I was more help. Now I'm kinda stumped.

If you have to think about a joke this hard, it just must not be very funny.

yeah i dont get it but it is a bad joke

maybe to get the guy out of there she gave him beer either because she didnt want to see nobody or she was glad that her husband died and gave jed the dead mans beer. lol.

I don't get this either, dude. What difference does expressing the news in this way and the conventional way make?

uh OK, not sure myself but, i see it like this if you have to explain a joke then to me it wasn't funny, and that wasn't funny

THE HOSPITAL CALLED AND TOLD HER ABOUT STEVE BEFORE JED GOT THERE, SO SHE GAVE HIM STEVE'S BEER OUT OF THE FRIDGE BECAUSE SHE DIDN'T DRINK.

I think Sharayah is right. It makes more sense that way and its funnier!

I'm guessing she was a huge fat-*** and it was a compliment. Like his "widow woman" (little woman)

Well first of all he delivered the news just like a stupid hick would. The beer is a reward since they didn't get along anyway.
OR, she figured her husband sent him there with an excuse to get the beer. Either way it's a stupid joke.

Shara has got the joke right, see above answer. I like it once it is told properly.
