Why do most VHS videos have speed-dialing tones at the very end of the tape? |
If you've ever just let a VHS tape run past the credits, has anyone noticed the telephone tones faintly dialing some mystery number just before the tape goes snowy? What purpose does that serve? Accepting serious, logical and honest answers only, please. These 'tones' you hear are computer 'peeking' codes that let certain VCRs know the tape has reached the end so the vcr can automatically rewind the tape without your input. They used to let the tapes run to the very end before automatic rewinding but this caused tapes to become 'shakey' when played back, so they started using the tones. You know how we store our stuff on our 'hard drive' and it stores everything as files & folders? Well, whenever something is stored on a 'tape drive (i.e.video tape/cassette tape)' it is stored as a pattern of tones. Hope this helps! :-) I've always wondered this too. |
