If 1950-1959 is called the 50's, and 1980-1989 is called the 80's, then what do we call 2000-2010?

I heard this question on the radio one day, and the best answer came from a woman who remembered her mother referring to 1900-1920, as the "aughties" (I think she said something about a German reference to the number 0?).

People misunderstood the question last time I posted so.....to help out......your answer should logically fit into the following sentence:

When I was a child, back in the ______, people still had landline telephones.

or

We're having a theme party with music from the _____'s.

recent years

the 20's again?

I guess the "two-thousands".

But who would want to have a theme party with music from today. It sux!!!

It sounds more dignified if you say:

The turn of the century

Turn of the century.

I always thought we were calling it the Noughties.

I've heard some people refer to it as "the doubt ots"-whatever that means!!~~~

Well previously we had the eighteen hundreds as in eighteen oh one, oh two, oh three etc;
The same with the nineteen hundreds so on that premise I guess logically we would now be in the twenty hundreds.
To grammatically fit your two examples it would have to be "early twenty hundreds".

The woman is right, though I don't know if it would be called just "the aughts" or "the aughties".

Double-aught refers to 00, 'aught' is an English (not American) term. It may be derived from German, but I speak some and it doesn't sound familiar to me.

I think most people just say 'turn of the century', early 20th (or for this time, 21st) century, the first/second decade of the 20th/21st century, etc. :-)
