Whay are so many stores asking for my telephone number?

Everytime I've bought something in a store lately they ask for my "home telephone number with area code"
What's up with this? Anyone who works in retail know the answer? I really don't want to give out my number, can I give my zipcode instead?

They want your phone number for marketing (advertising) purposes and to make it easier to find you if you don't pay your bill.

I agree completely with you about not giving out your phone number. In addition to not wanting to give it to the clerk, anyone who works in the store's office will have it as well, and so will the person behind you in the checkout.

I just give them a look that is half smiling and half regretful, and I say, "I'm sorry, but I don't give out my phone number." Only once in the last several years has that been a problem. Mostly, they just shrug and say okay. Give it a try. Good luck!!
