Dial up Modem question regarding telephone line?

I have a phone that has 2 lines my main number and a work number. Now, I have DSL but the work I'm doing at home is requiring me to have a dial up Modem as back up for emergencies. My question is if I leave my line 2 connected until I need to use the modem and all of a sudden I need the dial up modem, can I just unplug the phone line and connect the modem without having to do any computer restart or will this simple switch require a restart. I know it must sound like a dumb question but I really don't know and I thought I'd find a quick answer here. Thank you.
By the way if need to know, I have Windows XP and the modem is a Hiro v.92 56k USB Modem.

1.Can you Use Dialup as backup on the same line:
Ans: Yes you can.

2.Can i unplug the telephone line and connect to the modem?
Ans: Yes you can simpky unplug the line and connect it to a modem.

3.is this a simple switch over or i have to restart the system?
Ans: It is a very simple switch over. No need to restart the system.

Yes you can but I would get a cheap telephone line splitter or if your computer has two modem phone slots plug the wire from the wall into the one marked line and the other to phone.

The computer WILL not need to be restarted. Dial-in checks the line as part of the dialing process. The computer is making a telephone call.

ya you can even get a 2-1 telephone thing that will allow you to plug both in to one line


you definitely do not need a restart. you will just have to tell the software what connection you want to use.

You can do this without any problem.

The modem only checks for a phone line connection after you tell it to connect.
