Why do they let her get away with it? Not so sick Boss?!!!!!?

My boss misses more work than anyone I've ever met! Here is just one example: Last Tuesday afternoon she got a phone call around 2:35, (she had just got back from her 1 hour and 15 minute lunch) She walked into my office and stated that she didn't feel good all of the sudden and had to leave. She called in the next morning (Wednesday) and said she still couldn't make it as she was still sick. Thursday, we hadn't heard from her and by 11am the owner of the company was questioning me for her telephone # and her where abouts...
How would I know, last I knew she was sick...He called her house and there was no answer, so he left a message, she called back 2 hours later and said she was still sick, but she would come in to do the payroll. She came in to do payroll and made up a story. Every single time she is sick. Which is BI-Weekly. She has some long drawn out story. She is a hypochondriac! It makes me mad, because I never miss work, but they won't ever say anything to her!? Why?

SHE CALLED IN AGAIN THIS MORNING!!!!!!

Hmm, this sounds more like your frustrated ranting than a question, and I totally understand you. I work for the same kind of a person, only he also sleeps in his office for 1-3 hours every other day after lunch.

How big is your company? Who is your boss as relates to the rest of the bosses in the company? Do you have an HR department?

If your company is quite large and you have a separate HR department, you can go and talk to the counselor or any other adviser that they are hiring and express your doubts. In that case you should not say anything bad about her in a personal sense, but more in: this is keeping me distressed because she is never there and I have no good role model to work off. If you are a very good employee and the company is big enough they will care and listen to you. Make sure they promise you confidentiality. From there, let the HR department deal with it.

If your company is small and she is one of just a handful of senior people there, I suggest you just do your work and ignore her. You will be noticed for your merits, but at the same time, you will not get in trouble for complaining about your supervisor. If your frustration with this situation is too hard to handle, sign up to some gym or kick boxing class and imagine her head on the bag every time you kick it. Really helps.

Good Luck.

It will eventually catch up with her so just keep doing your job and stay quiet and you will see the upper management will soon catch on to her. They may just be documenting everything now so they have reasonable cause to dismiss her. They likely just are building a case now for dismissal and need documented proof of all the instances where she called in sick.

It is possible that she has some sort of illness that is not obvious and her boss is aware of it and is fine with it. Salaried employees also don't get overtime, so if she ever works long weeks (some people do some times of the year), it may be making up for some of the hours she's gone. I would be glad my boss isn't around much, because to me it's much easier for me to get my work done without someone looking over my shoulder. As for you having to keep up with her, maybe you should talk to the owner and suggest she should have to call in sick to him, not to the office, since it sounds like he is basically HER boss. Sounds like a small office, since you know the owner, and those places are notorious for putting up with a bunch of crap from one person for years before finally doing something about it. Just keep your head down, stay on your boss's good side and the owner's good side, and be glad you have a job. I know it's frustrating, I've been involved in these kinds of situations. You just have to watch your own back and let everybody else do the same. She'll eventually get hers.

She may have an illness you know nothing about.

I worked with a lady a while back that missed a lot of work. We'd talk about her missing quite a bit, and the bosses would just glare at us.

Well, one day she missed work because she was dead. the bosses gave us the full story at that time and we felt terrible for the things we'd said.

I've learned a great deal sinse then and keep my mouth shut.

She might be approved to use "intermittent" FMLA. If so, it is pretty much a 480.0 hour vacation with no possibility of getting a counseling memo for missing work. Family Medical Leave Act is a godsend for time and attendance abusers. If she has a depression problem, that would be a valid reason to request FMLA.

If not, just be patient, eventually it will catch up with her. It takes a LOT of time and is really frustrating.

Keep doing your job and try not to let your frustration show at work.
