Is it unprofessional to answer the telephone by speakerphone? is so, is there documentation that supports it?

my supervisor trips when i answer the phone by speaker. i want to know if it is a big no no in the corporate world.

This is definitely a big no no. Actually, it is unprofessional to ever put someone on a speaker phone without their knowledge. Callers to a professional office have a right to expect that what they are saying is not being broadcast. It is ettiquette 101 to always ask before putting someone on speaker phone.

I think that it is not professional to do so if they do not know you are going to do it. Also, in a place of business, people working near you do not need to hear your entire conversation. It is similar to the arguement about people and where they use their cell phones.

I hang up when they answer that way.

It depends on if whether or not what they are saying is confidential. In fact, depending on where you live it may be considered illegal or a privacy violation to do that.
