How do i set up my answering machine. i just bought GE cordless phone with answering machine?

i just bought a 40 channel 2.4 GHz call waiting caller ID cordless dual handset telephone/answering system. i can't get the answering machine to register a call or a message. i have follwed the instructions in the users' guide. but when i call from my cell phone and leave a message, it is not registered on the machine

I bet someone already had this machine and then brought it back to the store!! Bring it back and get a new one!!! It happened to me!!
