My high school, in the United States, has:
1. Full time and armed police officer on duty.
2. Security guard that lives on school grounds.
3. Barbed wire fencing surrounding the campus and the bleachers.
4. Black security camera orbs in every hall way, the cafeteria, the parking lot, and every bus.
5. Everyone is assigned a Student ID Number and given an identity card.
6. Specific dress code. No hats.
7. Mandatory attendance. If you miss a day, a computer will telephone your house and leave a recording if you don't answer.
8. No PDAs: Public Display of Affection. No hugs or holding hands.
9. A building, over fifty years old, now at 200% capacity.
10. Lunch break is twenty minutes, and students spend half standing in line. Students aren't allowed to leave. Chicken every day.
11. Students are herded from class to class, following their schedule, by a bell system.
12. School starts at 7am. Everyone is a sleep deprived zombie and half are on prozac.
How'd it get so bad? Well, number 12 is your own faults...my son is 13, & despite what I say, he stays up later than I want him to.
But, he isn't on prozac.
Other than that, teens have been known to have little self dicipline. SO, part of that above is for you..(again, citing my 13 year old) But, part of it is too keep unwanted people out of the school, & maybe even protect you from yourselves!
During my reunion, we went back to school for a tour. One of my favorite teachers, 30 years older now, was beaten by a student, because he asked him for a hall pass!
The guy was out a week & would be out longer recovering. The majority of teens should be in cages! (again, citing my 13 year old!) Because kids have become criminals. they wanna discipline the students, like, "IF YOU DONT TURN IN YOUR ASSIGNMENT ILL BEAT JO AZZ!!!" cause of all the dirtbags that go to highschool We let egghead's with PhD's run things. They think that all kids regardless of how disruptive should be in school. Also, the courts have forced schools to mix special needs kids with regular kids and causing the quality of education to suffer for all. When bored kids screw up. Because of school shootings and violence.
Because of overcrowding, because of parent's schedules, so kids are left at home less.
To protect and influence the children of the future. It was caused by integration, mixing the bad with the good.
Before you judge me, remember this.
"The cry of racism is to often a blanket thrown to cover reality." Because parents stopped paying attention to their kids and it's pretty much just a free for all these days. Back when people raised their kids right, this stuff didn't happen. So if you want your kids to live to see 20, raise them to be good people. Raise them to follow the rules, treat other people well and respect authority! If everyone would take the time to do that, the world would be a better place. i don't know. It's like that at my MIDDLE SCHOOL too. It's not that bad, but it's pretty close. They act like we're on death roll. Oh, and the teachers. geez. It sounds pretty much like any company you will work for once you graduate. Consider it job training. ugh, you are so oppressed You bring up some excellent points! Schools have become prisons out of necessity. When the front door of the school slams shut each morning, societies ills are not locked out. Events such as school shootings have forced schools to take the offensive. Lack of funding and leadership have taken their toll on today's schools. Our system is broke, high schools are especially archaic and don't meet the needs of today's societies. As much as I hate to admit it we need to privatize schools, so money becomes at the very least, adequate. Does Columbine ring any bells? Most all the rules you've mentioned are because your peers don't know how to control themselves.
Just like everything else in life, the good get punished right along with the bad. It's unfortunate but that's the way society has become.
I didn't fund terrorists, or fly an airplane into the Twin Towers but that event has changed the way you do so many things, from airport security to banking. The good get punished with the bad...it's just that simple. Schools became prisons when kids became bandits. At least these ones I can somewhat interpret:
1. Keeps kids from shooting up their schools.[particularly at bad schools]
2. Keeps kids from killing their teachers and peers.[same as top, bad schools]
3. Keeps kids from skipping school
4. If a crime is committed we know who did it.
5. If something happens to you, we know who you are and who to contact. [Became a rule when something like this happend]
7. If a kid skips, the parents will know.
All the other ones are pointless and stupid. PDA? SO WHAT?! 12, i know we need kids to 'get used to the real world' but why now? kids need sleep and now its impossible to get it.
Im a student and it sucks. But then again, I HAVE been kept from breaking some rules because of these precautions. So I guess some work. You have some good responses here but unfortunately the real reasons are not politically correct and therefore will not be posted.
If you take a look around with your eyes wide open, you will understand why. That is a complex question--and my answer is entirely non-partisan (for once!)--I say that because the phrasing will sound anti-conservative. But BOTH liberals and conservatives are equally guilty (also, this is my estimate as a sociologist with a lot of researchon education issues):

>for school systems/administrators, security serves as a mantra--it shows they are "doing something," that they are "keeping kids safe"--and it avoids liability
>the security fetis conceals the declining quality of edcuation
>teachers no longer work with students--instead its a matter of social control (surveillance) not mentoring (supervision).
Some conseqences:
Our children are being socialized into accepting a "1984" style world--with the state ceded all rights to privacy and allowed to monitor the smallest and most intimate details of personal life. That is NOT a "conspiracy teory"--simply an observation that our young people are becoming increasingly vulnerable to the kind of demagogues and power seekers who seek absolute power.
The other consequences:
a) the system conceals abuse by teachers, etc. Estimates currently indivate that20% of children are sexually abused by teachers by the time they leave school. NOTE: this is encouraged by bureaucratic surveillance, not reduced. A surveillance system can be beaten easily by anyone who knows the set up. Supervision that depends on human interaction and students and teachers knowing each other is MUCH harder to subvert--because someone will notice something--and ACT.
Last consequence: if this situation is not reversed, you can forget America remaining a world leater. Taht depends on innovation and independant thing, as well as high-quality education. Initiative, independance of thought, and excellance have been engineered out of our schools--largely in the name of "security." Without that, future generations of Americans will not be able to compet in our globalized economy.
All this from an admitted overdone system of school security? No--but the mindset it represents--the underlying social and educational forces of which the security fetish is only a symptom--very definately yes. Start with the man in the mirror.
I realize it's "cool" to be a victim...but you're simply not. You and your buddies threaten the teachers. You and your buddies wear the disgusting clothing. You want a brand new building? YOU and your buddies pay the taxes to build it. I don't have kids and I have to pay for it.
Don't tell me about fair. When you get a job...or should I say, IF you can get your GED and even get a job, and start paying for stuff caused by criminals, we'll have this conversation again.
If you don't like it , quit. Better yet, try a school in Japan. You'll wear a uniform, days will be longer, and oh by the way, you go SIX days a week. The reason it is like that is there is too much violence. Plus they wont have to worry about guns and other stuff and someone coming in that doesnt belong there. I hated to go to school when I went to high school because of the bomb threats I didnt feel safe at school. School is not a place to have fun hug and kiss and stuff it is too learn. At least you dont have to worry too much about getting shot or someone bringin a gun to school. I went to school when colombine happened and after that happened we were getting bomb threats like every day pretty much. so all that survalance in schools is a good thing. We've had too many crazies attacking in the schools, either from the inside or the outside. Parents are panicked that their kids will get hurt or worse, based on what we're all seeing in the papers. By taking the first 5 precautions, they get a feeling of security that their kids won't die for an education.
Dress codes are becoming fashionable for 2 reasons. First, when everybody's wearing the same thing, kids may not get beaten up and have their fancy clothes stolen. And it keeps the areas covered that should be covered.
It's the responsibility of the parent to be sure their kids are there, and it's illegal for kids not to attend some type of school, even if it's homeschooling. The school has to have some way of letting the parents know if something's up.
I think they're carrying PDA's too far, personally, but it started out as a way to keep kids from pushing each other around, or prevent "unwanted" or "inappropriate" touching. If a kid wanted to be left alone, this was supposed to let him.
Letting the building be so overcrowded is just irresponsible. Most likely, your state has a small budget for education, and it's not building schools out of it, even though it's been shown that kids learn better in smaller classes.
The lunch break is probably so short because there are so many kids--the cafeteria is maxed out in size, so they can't fit all the kids in at once--it's a factor of the building being so overcrowded. I've not heard of a single meal all the time before--it sounds like the head cook just doesn't have any imagination, especially since there are a lot cheaper menus than chicken.
Some things never change on moving from class to class. I graduated in 1981, and we were on a bell system, too. We had 10 minutes to get from one end of the building to the other, and if you had to go to your locker or go to the bathroom (which wasn't safe, anyway), you were SOL.
We started at 7:45, and the reason everybody is a zombie is that your body clock changes when you hit your teens. Suddenly, your system starts going "I need to stay up until after midnight and sleep until noon." The schools just don't take that into consideration, partly because they have to worry about parents' schedules and any other kids that the teens may be responsible for. it`s like being in the army and the teachers are like drilsarghants it`s mading Its Called Conditioning the masses.
