Missed Office Bday.. should I take this personally??

Your Open QuestionShow me another 禄
How rude is this?
My office celebrates birthdays by having our bdays listed on a monthly list ( we have over 20 employees ). Our inner office which I am part of does individual cakes for our office staff and usually it's an afternoon after lunch celebration.

Well.. here it goes. My Birthday is posted along with the others like all. I am sharing this day with 2 other individuals.

As petty as this sounds... we have two cakes here.. One each of the other two..... nothing NOTHING for me. I am really hurt by this and feel like calling off Thursday and Friday just to take some time away from these folks.

This is a message that screams.. you mean nothing to this office and your not even worth awknowleging like the rest.

No. not new there and I am a manager...

This has happened to me...I just let it go...I did not stoop to their level...I put a smile on my face when it came to their birthday..gave a gift...and just wish them happy birthday...It does hurt,,,but if they did this intentionally and you acknowledge it they get what they want....tension in the work place..so act as if it does not bother you...tell them what a great time you had at the surprise party.(could be just a little lie)...send yourself some flowers at the place you work...get the point across,,,that maybe they don't care but someone does...and by the way Happy Birthday...If they did forget,,,,,the flowers will be enough to jolt their memory...and if they did it intentionally the flowers will show to them it didn't work...The card should read better late than never Love ( name) ( another lie) they deserve it.....

That's either a huge oversight or they aren't too fond of you.. however, it takes incredible guts to stand up to a manager by sending a not-so-subtle message in the form of zero acknowledgment of your special day...

I'm guessing they overlooked the day because of the other two birthdays. Are you usually heavily involved with getting cakes for everyone's birthdays or making sure cards go around to have everyone sign? If so, they probably overlooked your birthday, simply because they weren't used to organizing everything like you did.

OR... they wanted to give you a special day all of your own tomorrow!!!.. ;) Don't call off work.. be the bigger person... :) I'm sorry that your birthday was a semi-crummy one... And happy birthday!!!!! :)

well i sorta feel you during my elementry years people would get little trinkets from the office for their birthday but my bday was on the last day of august so i never got one but my friends bdays are in july n they got them befor school was out what im saying is that it happens just tell em can i get a cake or just ignore it someone will notice but dont get angry jus let it go stuff happens

first and foremost Happy Birthday!!!
that is soooo messed up though!!! im really sorry about that. if they didnt even say anything about the fact that it was ur birthdy as well then it means they probably didnt realize it wich according to you is impossible because they post it or they are incredible jack...butts.... and in which case you shouldnt let it bother you because those ppl are just pricks... if they apologize though i would just be like whatever... forgive them after you accidentally forget their birthday :)

sheesh..calm down..probably an oversight..are you new there?.....discuss it with someone in power in a curious and not bitchy freaked out way......be mature about it...im sure they will be embarassed rather than the annoyed and offended manner that they could be if you acted childish and "hurt" by it...be humble

I'd be very hurt. Don't freak out or act childish, like another answer said, but still show that you're hurt. You're a manager? That's really messed up. Take a few days off.

That's really messed up, I'd be hurt too. Don't take the next 2 days off. If they did do it on purpose don't let them know they got to you.

that might be a good idea but you shouldnt stay gone to long from work. And hey, maybe they just arnt your real friends..
HAPPY BDAY!! :)

You are correct. Don't bother participating. They will get it after a while.

I DO agree that it can be pretty "deflating" if they don't treat you like they should. a couple of points to make though--if you just take off for no "real " reason, you COULD POSSIBLY lose your job.--That wouldn't do you any good! OR, you could be the"BIGGER PERSON" and buy your own cake and pick out which friends you want to share it with. THEN,( if you have an understanding boss) go to him/her and explain how it made you feel. If you are a good worker,(and it sounds like you are), rather than take the chance on losing you they MIGHT do something exrta special to let your co-workers know that YOUR "special day" was overlooked. It could work out for you in the "long run"??? By the way---HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO A GREAT PERSON!!!

As you are a manager you have to just overlook this and act maturley.. they probably wanted the other 2 make welcome as they are new.. you should not let this bother you.. why can't 2 cakes be shared amongst 3 people who have a birthday? I would not take it to heart if staff forgot my birthday.. a lot of people don't get anything ever for their birthdays.. you should only mind if your close friends forget your birthday.. that would make me upset or colleagues who are friends at work.. they should remember but as for the rest.. I would not mind at all.. I would definitely calm down and act professional if you are the manager..that is not worth it over a forgotten cake...to not go into work and neglect your responsibilities other people never get a cake and still have to work x
