19 year old female welder?

I'm looking into joining a technical school nearby to go through a welding program that would lead up to my certification. i have no experience working with welding equipment, and i've always worked office jobs. will this be a problem with the training program? any tips, comments, experiences shared is appreciated, I will pick best answer. thanks.

Go for it!

Try to get some certifications for doing specialty welding. This will be your bread and butter. You can tinker around with sculpture, etc...for fun. But go after specialty welding certificates. They land you the jobs that pay!

Example:
Steam pipe
High pressure pipe
High pressure vessel
Fire surpession systems
Sprinkler systems for industrial plants
Gas line welding
Etc...stuff like that

Being a welder in the "Pipe Fitter" world, pays very well....in the realm of skilled trades.

You will never go hungry...and will be able to find work where ever you go.

I'm a female welding student, and I work in a plastic surgeons office by day. I LOVE IT!!!!! DO IT!!!!! $$$$$$$$$$ I weigh 105 pounds, and haven't had any trouble hanging in there, it does take strength though, so eat your wheaties! Report Abuse

Good for you! I'm sure you'll do fine. I used to do copper brazing. Its hard to be in a mostly male field. It may sound silly but you should be in good physical shape, lifting is needed and you can't expect people to always do it for you. Plus wear the protective eye coverings all the time, the bright light will hurt your vision. Good Luck

My daughter is a certified welder. Money was great but she gave it up due to the smoke involved. She wore gear but was hacking up black junk. I am sure there is better equipment than what she had out there. If you are interested GO for it! And get to your local video store and rent Flashdance! (Girl welder that wants to dance.)

IF YOU GET YOUR CERTIFIED AND LIKE IT THAN IT WILL BE A GOOD MONEY MAKER IF YOU ARE WILLING TO TRAVEL AND DO TURNAROUND WORK IN THE REFINERYS THAN YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO MAKE FROM $25 TO $38 PER HOUR AND $75 TO $100 A DAY SUB. WE ARE ALWAYS LOOKING FOR GOOD ALL AROUND WELDERS (i.e) PIPE, BOILER TUBE WELDERS BUT BE READY AND WILLING TO WORK 12 TO 16 HRS AND 7DAYS A WEEK FOR 6 TO 14 WEEKS AT A TIME AWAY FROM HOME AND SOMETIMES ONLY 7 DAYS OFF BEFORE YOU HAVE TO BE AT THE NEXT JOB (GOOD LUCK)

welding job usually involes handling of heavy metal sometimes, so u should be prepared to do hard manual work, if u r used to office works, better keep with them and try to improve on those skills

I'm guessing that you will be taught everything in class. When there listen carefully and don't get frustrated!

Training programs are there to ...guess what .. train you in skills that you don't have. If that's something of an interest, then go for it!
