Paragard or Mirena? And Cost Issues?

I was sold on Mirena, but now I'm wondering if Paragard would be better. The ONLY advantage I can see to Paragard is that it lasts longer. I've been on the pill and the shot before, so I know I can handle the hormones in Mirena. What I don't know I can handle are the heavy periods on Paragard. I've been on Depo for years, and haven't had a period, and don't know if I want to deal with heavy bleeding and cramping every month for 10 - 12 years! Any experiences to share?

Also, as far as cost, my insurance company has told me 100% they absolutely will not cover the device. I know that both manufacturers have payment plans, but my insurance will also absolutely not cover insertion. So basically I have to put it on a credit card, which I don't want to do! Is it cheaper to get it done at Planned Parenthood, or at a private gyno office? I don't doubt PP's abilities, I'm just looking for the cheapest way possible.

I have had the Mirena for about 4 years now. I LOVE the no period thing, and there are defiantly advantages to not worrying about birth control for 5 years! I haven't had any negative side effects from the Mirena but I'm sure it's different for everyone.

I believe that it is cheaper at PP. You should call and talk to them about it. PP is government funded, so they are able to make many different forms of birth control more affordable, not to mention they may be able to set up a payment plan for you rather than having to put it on a credit card!

I was on the pill for about 8 years and tolerated them pretty well before switching to Mirena. . .which gave me the worst acne of my life the whole time I had it in (4+ years). That's just my experience, just like hormones vary from pill to pill they vary from pill to Mirena. I won't be going back to Mirena but would consider Paragard in the future as bc after I'm done having children.

My insurance covered costs associated with Mirena but from what I hear, the cost at PP is much lower than a private practice.
