How would you handle impatience about getting your degree? |
I have this one academic year to go before i get my phd. it has been three years of gruelling hard work and of course...the insults ...the shame ... the spitting ... the humiliation... i cant take it any more. I have had enough of sharing a phone with 30 others, of walking to work, earning half of what a clerk with an associate degree does... of being ordered around by office staff.. A long time ago... I beat the mediocre students fair and square... over and over again through school and college...somehow at 23, i find those losers have popped out of nowhere and have become my boss... I am sick of being looked down by ordinary middle class people as a "student" and therefore a second class human being... I cant wait any more...but i am worried that in my all consuming hatred ... i might screw up this very crucial last year and therefore not attain the prestige of a faculty job that would bring my world back into natural order:... me above...clerks MUCH below me.... what do i do? I'm wondering if you went for a Ph.D. for the wrong reasons. Your post makes it sound like status is all that matters in life. You implied that mediocre students are losers. Maybe you're treated like a second-class human being because you evidently feel entitled to treat others that way. Well, I have been planning on beginning a PhD program next year. I had no idea there was spitting involved!! <smiles> Difficult for some but you can learn patience- if you really want to. And patience is very important when dealing with so many types of people.
