Tax Relief for Property Taxes? |
I live in the house my grandmother lived in until she passed recently. I paid the taxes on the house a couple months ago even though the bill was in her name. They just sent a check here for $116.53. Should I return this, or deposit it in the bank account we both shared? I keep trying to contact the office but its been ringing busy since last week. I dont really want to do anything with it until I speak with someone. Suggestions? What you really need to do is go to the county court house and find out what's going on! You need to go to the County tax assessors office with the check and your grandmothers death certificate. Most likely your grandmother had a homestead exemption and a senior citizen discount on the taxes. The sooner they know that she no longer owns the home the better, they could in the future charge you or the executor back taxes. If the check was written in your deceased grandmother's name, you definitely need to talk to the tax authorities. Depositing it would require you to forge her name, and that could land you in hot water. You give that check to the executor of your grandmother's will. |
