Port of Entry (POE) EWR (Newark-NJ) - Do Newark POE issue Social Security no at the airport?

Hi All,

I would like to know, do POE (Newark, NJ) offer/issue Social security application while new immigrant get their fingure print done at the arrival procedure.
I went to local social security office to get my spouse's SS# and the officer ask me that Didn't she apply her social security no with INS at the POE (Newark, NJ), since my spouse didn't know anything about it (this is her first experience, I guess), we told the officer that she don't know about that so the officer took the application and told us they will cross check with INS and will let us know in four weeks.
Yesterday, I called the SS office and they told me that the application is still under process and may take up to 90 days. I am wounder why it's taking that long, wothout her SS#, she can't get medical insurence and neither she can work nor apply for licence.
When I came to US, I got my SS# in 2 weeks only. Why that long now??
Is some one has kind of inforation about such thing, please share your expereince/ knowledge.

Customs and Border Protection does not issue Social Security cards, nor do we pass out applications for a social security card. You can fill out and print an application at their web site. If they told you they will cross check with INS, (which doesn't exist any longer) what they probably said is that they have to check for an immigration record. Make sure she is here legally. Which also surprises me. I think they hand these things out like candy, I have taken many away from illegals.
